Ashley 9/14/09:

If you look at our "photos" tab you will see a picture of Dr. Kurt Niemann. Anna and I are indebted to Dr. Niemann for the care that he gave Anna for over 25 years. Dr. Niemann was the reason that we moved to Birmingham and the continuity of care that he provided contributed significantly to Anna's mobility today. Known mostly for his expertise with "rodding" surgeries, Dr. Niemann was head of Orthopedics at Children's Hospital and the University of Alabama Hospital. He spent hours (mostly on weekends) attending OIF-Alabama Chapter meetings and spending time with OI families from across the state. He was more than a Doctor; he was a father figure that spent as much time as was needed to address your questions and concerns. At the conclusion of our office visits, he would tell Anna to "keep on keeping on." This was his motto and we intend to place a sign stating K.O.K.O. at the summit of Kilimanjaro in memory of Dr. Niemann. Dr. Niemann passed away in 2005 and we were honored that his wife, Charlene, asked Anna and me to speak at his funeral.

My students and I LOVED your visit last week. They are really pumped about following your blog as you climb the mountain. You are an inspiration for us and a golden gem of a "teachable moment" during our unit on leadership and using one's gifts and talents to the betterment of your fellow beings. Who knows? Maybe youwil double your original fundraising goal!

Ashley & Anna,

I have just finished all of your posts. Ashley, Davonia and I are so glad we ran into you at the Diplomat and had the opportunity to hear about this adventure. Anna, to think how much you have overcome makes me re-think some of life's minor irritations.

Best of luck to both of you! I will be following your blog throughout your journey.

Frank Buck
